Our Own Field of Dreams…

The good ol’ days

Why can’t every year be as awesome as 1991?  Why you ask?   Just look at some of the all time great albums released that year:

1.  Guns ‘n Roses – Use Your Illusion I & II

2.  Nirvana – Nevermind

3.  RHCP – Blood Sugar Sex Magik

4.   Pearl Jam – Ten

5.  Soundgarden – Badmotorfinger

6.  Metallica – Black album

Can anyone find a year with 6 better albums?

In our lifetime? Not a chance. 1991 was our 1967, when these babies dropped:

    “Sgt Peppers”
    “The Doors”
    “Are You Experienced”
    “The Greatful Dead”
“Piper at the Gates of Dawn”
    “Between the Buttons”

Not a chance? Bite your tongue. 1994 deserves consideration based on these three alone:

    NIN “The Downward Spiral”
    Jeff Buckley “Grace”
    Soundgarden “Superunknown”

I could stop there but you know I fuckin’ won’t:

    Pearl Jam “Vitology”
    Tom Petty “Wild Flowers”
    R.E.M. “Monster”
    Stone Temple Pilots “Purple”
    Weezer “Blue Album”
    Green Day “Dookie”
    Live “Throwing Copper”
    Beck “Mellow Gold”
    Beastie Boys “Ill Communication”
    Nirvana “Unplugged in NY”
    Portishead “Dummy”
    Bush “Sixteen Stone”
    Oasis “Definitely Maybe”
    Snoop “Doggy Style”
DMB “Under the Table and Dreaming”

This is an awesome question. I haven’t had this much fun at work in months. I should be fired.

I stand corrected. Though I’d add Offspring “Smash” to that damn fine list. And don’t worry, it’s only a matter of years before you’re a full time writer for ruralminority.

    For your further consideration:
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers – Into the Great Wide Open – 1991

    Michael Jackson – Dangerous – 1991
    REM – Out of Time – 1991
    U2 – Actung Baby – 1991
Bone Thugs ‘n Harmony – Creepin on ah come up – 1994
PS Johnny, I was listening to smash at the gym last week… f’n love that album

  5. I have registered on this site simply to add “Loveless” by My Bloody Valentine to the 1991 list.
